History

Marinvest was established in 1988 with the objective to establish a long-term presence in the shipping market. The company was started by Lars Mossberg after leaving his position as executive vice president with Zenit Shipping AB, where he had served since 1978.

From 1988 and during a 10 year period Marinvest invested and put together shipping projects in various sectors from dry-cargo chemical to product tankers.

In 1997 Marinvest managed to attracted investors to create LR Shipholding Ltd in Bermuda who, with a focus on LR1 purchased the LR1 M/T Panda.

In 2000 and 2001 additional LR1 ships were acquired by LR Shipholding and entered into the LR1 pool, operated by Torm.

In 2004 Marinvest invested and became a partner of Sirius Shipping.

In 2004 the LR Shipholding Group authorized Marinvest to sign four contracts for LR1, Ice 1A newbuildings for delivery from second half 2006 to first half 2008.

In connection herewith LR Shipholding Ltd formed Skagerack Invest Limited and its 75% owned subsidiary LR ICE Shipholding.

During spring 2006 an agreement was reached to acquire another two LR1, Ice 1A newbuilding contracts in connection with delivery from the shipyard.

In 2010 Marinvest founded Hafnia Management and attracted four partners and a team of skilled personnel to establish the Hafnia LR and MR chartering pools.

In 2011 Marinvest contributed to setting up the Straits Tanker pool, a joint venture between MOL and Hafnia. Since then, all Marinvest managed spot vessels trade in the Hafnia/Straits LR1 pool.

In 2011 Marinvest co-founded Hafnia Freight AS. Experts in freight trading Hafnia Freight AS assist Marinvest to manage risk and hedge freight exposure.

In 2013 Marinvest negotiated on behalf of Skagerack and Waterfront the newbuilding and charter contracts for two 50,000 dwt oil/chemical carriers with dual-fuel methanol engines, all agreements and financing in place by February 2014. M/T Mari Jone and M/T Mari Boyle were delivered in 2016.

In 2014, Skagerack exercised an option to buy 25% in LR ICE Shipholding, making it a 100% held subsidiary.

In 2015, Maribel and Mariann were fixed on 2 year Time Charter to Lukoil for ice trading in the Baltics.

In 2016 M/T Mari Jone and M/T Mari Boyle were delivered to the joint ventures between Skagerack and Waterfront. The two MR methanol dual-fuel vessels are among the world’s first ocean-going vessels capable of running on methanol.  With the growing demand for cleaner marine fuel to meet environmental regulations, methanol is a promising alternative fuel for ships that can meet the industry’s increasingly stringent emissions regulations. Methanol is a biodegradable, clean-burning marine fuel that significantly reduces smog-causing emissions such as particulates, sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides.
